Steve West started training with Riai Aikido in Hamilton in 1986. In 1989 he worked in London, returning to live in Rotorua in 1990 and training under Dianne Haynes sensei who graded Steve to sho dan (first degree black belt) in 1993. In 1994 Steve trained under Mike Ashwell sensei at the Ponsonby Community Centre dojo and graded to ni dan in 1997. In 2013 Steve was awarded his Sandan (3rd degree black belt) by Henry Lynch (6th Dan) sensei, Head of Riai Aikido, Australasia.
Steve is dojo cho of Mitcham Riai Aikido in Melbourne, which he established in November 2010. Steve’s aikido philosophy is an evolving set of ideas centred on expanding knowledge through training on the mat to influence his actions in daily life.
Steve has worked as a registered psychiatric nurse since 1980.
